The effect of globalization has enriched us in very many ways. In every society, at present, there’s none as underdog. There is always a scope for one’s becoming the champion. Yes, “Slumdog Millionaire” stands in close proximity. Unfortunately, so many questions have, in the meantime, crept in.
O yes, awards are often confusing and controversial. From Nobel Prize and Oscar down to our local honors such attempts are always under the shadow of criticism. ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ is no exception.
To begin with, the very title is rewarding. Again, ‘slum’, being connected with the word ‘dog’, might have made ‘slumdog’ a bit helpless. We live in the age of globalization and gradually are losing our identity. It can never be otherwise. Exchange of thoughts and ideas are always enriching but at the same time, as a whole, little bit misleading.
It is reported, ‘slamdog’- the very name has defamed Indian culture and is now under trial in a provincial High Court. It’s really ‘much ado about nothing’. We fail to do the best, nor even can participate in some better accomplishments, but never afraid of leg-pulling.
However, we are supposed to look at the West. They talk much about ‘great sex’ for healthy heart and fitness. Free mixing among the boys and girls in the western countries has been globalized through art and literature, reflected especially in the large screens of the cinema halls. These could have been criticized by and large. But we were not so very cultured(!) to raise protest against those actions and achievements.
Finally, it may be inferred that for the sake of world wide market and monopoly none can stop any ugliness to have wide publicity provided it is basically supported by art and culture. Mind that, as civilization advances we are losing our identity at the cost (great thoughts) of intermingling of different cultures. We go against it or stand in support, it doesn’t matter much. None can prevent it. It has got to be propagated. This is life and we are to make the most of it at every step. Right?
